Experience

Patrick Haines' practice emphasizes litigation of both civil and criminal matters.  Mr. Haines has tried dozens of criminal cases before Colorado juries while serving as a Deputy District Attorney in Boulder, Colorado's 20th Judicial District.  His felony case work focused on complex economic crimes, including embezzlement, forgery, defrauding secured creditors, and theft in all of its forms.  Mr. Haines has attended training sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and other leading practitioners of "follow the money" investigations, both to develop evidence and to recover restitution for victims.

Mr. Haines also has significant experience handling appellate matters, having worked as the Appellate and Complex Litigation Deputy in the 20th Judicial District Attorney's Office.  He has successfully prosecuted and defended appeals of county court criminal convictions, Department of Motor Vehicles hearing results, Rule 106 reviews of state agency actions, and has sought review of lower court rulings by the Colorado Supreme Court through C.A.R. 21 petitions.  Mr. Haines clerked for the Honorable Maria Berkenkotter in the 20th Judicial District Court prior to beginning work as a prosecutor, where he assisted with a predominantly civil docket that included appellate review of lower court rulings.

Prior to entering law school, Mr. Haines spent ten years working as an environmental scientist and consultant.  While working for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Haines coordinated the state's air emissions testing program to determine compliance with Clean Air Act permits, and also worked on permitting Title V industrial facilities and enforcing those permits.  Mr. Haines then spent five years managing the air monitoring task at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site for URS Corporation, under subcontract to the U.S. Department of Energy, through completion of the superfund cleanup.  This hands-on experience working for regulatory agencies and on behalf of regulated entities gives Mr. Haines unique and valuable insights into issues of environmental and regulatory law.

Prior to entering college, Mr. Haines spent six years serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was decorated for his service in the first Persian Gulf War.  When time allows, he enjoys golf, skiing, hiking, music, and spending time with his family.
